Money as Debt- the must see movie

Money as DebtMoney as Debt- the must see animated short feature

“It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning.” ~Henry Ford

With an estimated over two million views online at various websites like Google Video and Youtube, the creator, Paul Grignon has done a masterful job explaining in the most entertaining way, a subject very few including those in the world of finance understand. This animated short feature production is a milestone achievement considering Paul is not a noted economist. He by profession is a Canadian artist who lives in beautiful British Columbia.  Lucky guy!

To quote Paul Grignon- “It is my intention to make this mysterious debt-money system comprehensible to everyone. It is also my intention to foster sufficient understanding of the problems with this money system that citizens will be motivated to join the monetary reform movement and/or create local alternatives to the global monetary system“.

A little background

In the production process Paul was supported by four consultants knowledgeable in monetary policy and economics to validate his film’s claims and contextual accuracy.  One of those individuals is a monetary historian and has been called as an expert witness to testify in cases against the banks in Canada’s federal Supreme Court as well as British Columbia’s Supreme Court.  So, don’t dismiss this as merely an entertaining cartoon.

Also, this film has not gone unnoticed by the experts.  For example, the American Monetary Institute in the USA also saw the animation. One described the film as: “far and away the best explanation of fractional reserve banking” he had ever seen. They requested that they be able to use it for their educational purposes as well.

As expected, there are some critics just as any film has, voicing claims of inaccuracies contained in the movie. As the subject matter is generally considered foreign to the intended audience, simplification was used to convey complex concepts of money/debt and its creation. He has just released the sequel, “Money as Debt II – Promises Unleashed” a three year endeavor which includes addressing two important disputed claims.  I will do a follow up post on the new film once having viewed it.

Why should I watch this?

Money as Debt released in 2006, runs 47 minutes and is in my opinion, a must see movie. Given today’s global economic chaos and the miss-information surrounding some of the causes, “Money as Debt” leads one into a greater understanding as to why this is happening. It may even move you to action!

Even though at first glance a topic such as money & debt can be complicated and quickly make ones eyes glaze over, I promise this will not happen. It’s educational, entertaining, colorful, fast moving and thought provoking to say the least. Furthermore, it is intended for all audiences.

Go now, grab the popcorn your favorite beverage and enjoy the movie!
